The book is an hilarious and truthful story of Don’s life, and how his brother, Columbia real estate investor Jim Gordon, came to his rescue and donated one of his kidneys to save Don’s life. Don calls Jim his “spare parts man”.

Don became a successful entrepreneur and owned several businesses in the Columbia area. He was also a successful entrepreneur in the medical arena helping in the area of specific genetic medicine to help those with kidney and other genetic problems.

“It was pretty hard to talk my brother into having a living organ cut out of his body,” Don added. “It’s all in there—this is not the Chamber of Commerce version of what goes on in transplants, this is the real deal.”

Below is an interview I had with Don Gordon near the statehouse—in the rain!

Don begins the book stating that: “There was a time when my world included no financial, health, or woman problems: then I turned five years old.”

From that point on the narrative describes the bewilderment of a young boy trying to understand the complicities of a failing kidney and what that meant for life—or death! He still remembers the thing that frightened him more than knowing about his kidney issue, that was his mother crying in the night when she thought he was asleep in bed.

In the book Don covers everything from growing up Southern, to “Yankee food”, the girl who loved hi to divorce and more.  A memorable line to his estranged wife at the time, who had asked him for a divorce, was “Does this mean that your offer to give me one of your kidneys is off?”

Don says he doesn’t know for sure if if he is the longest living kidney recipient in the country, but thanks to Dr. U.X. Cullum, he does know that he is the longest surviving kidney recipient from Columbia Nephrology Center.

In 2023, that miraculous transplant will have enabled Don to live 40 years since the transplant. Don says that he and his brother Jim are closer than they’ve ever been.

This book is for real people who will appreciate Don’s real attitude for life and living. This is a must read if you ever wanted to know about kidney transplants, the straightforward reality of his adventure of major surgery, life growing up in the South as a child, and living to tell about it!

I highly recommend the book Snowball’s Chance by my long time friend Don Gordon! Your only regret will be if you don’t get a copy and read it!
