Wednesday night the full House of Representatives approved by a voice vote, an amendment (154) to the 2024 Defense Appropriations bill (HR 4365) offered by Rep Andrew Clyde of Georgia. The Amendment would deny funds for the removal of the Confederate “Reconciliation” Memorial in Arlington National Cemetery.

Attorney for the protection of the monument Kirk D. Lyons said, “non-stop calls to congress made this happen!” He continued that a brief celebration is in order but that Southerners and others who want to protect the monuments had better “go right back to work.”

Lyons said “Our victory was not complete. A companion Amendment (No 155) to defund implementing the Un-American Naming Commission recommendations failed in a roll call vote 261-172, with numerous GOP defections.” He urged citizens that they “should call and chew them out” for not voting to protect the monument of peace offered to heal the nation over 100 years ago.

South Carolina’s Congressional delegation was mixed in their voting with four voting to protect the monument and two voting to remove the peace monument. Those voting to remove the monument were: Democrat Jim Clyburn, District 6, and Republican Nancy Mace, District 1.

You may visit the House Clerk’s office to see how all Congressional members voted. Forty eight Republicans  from around the country voted with Democrats to push the bill forward for a final vote tally of 172 to 261. Former Vice President Mike Pence did not vote on the bill.

The Defense Appropriation Bill, as amended, which includes the “Congressional Naming Commission” will now be voted on by the House perhaps as early as Thursday night or Friday where it is expected to pass. The bill will then proceed to the US Senate.

Lyons says the fate of the monument is in the hands of those who call their US Senator and ask them to protect American history and symbols by not removing the monument. He said “call, keep calling, and get others to call”.

The Bill if passed will remove the Reconciliation Monument from Arlington Cemetery which was created, design and built by Jewish sculptor Moses Ezekiel.

The Confederate Reconciliation or Peace Monument was erected in 1914 on property originally owned by George Washington and passed to the wife of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The property was confiscated by federal forces during the War Between the States.

President Woodrow Wilson said that the monument was “one of the greatest works of art in Arlington”! Discovery Magazine quoted Wilson as saying at the monument’s unveiling in 1914, that it “represented the best of America—a spirit of reconciliation, democracy, freedom, heroism and patriotism.”

In that same Discovery article Wilson is also quoted as saying that the monument was “an emblem of a reunited people.” Wilson considered the monument a closure of the contentions between factions in the United States declaring “this chapter in the history of the United States closed.” Further, he said that “such a monument would be a symbol of our duty and our privilege to be like the country we represent.”
