OPINION

The question was asked if there was a division in the vote for state Chairman among the ranks of Republicans who gathered for the SC Republican State Convention this past Saturday? The only division was the one caused by SC State Republican Party Chairman Drew McKissick and some of his minions in Horry and a couple of other counties. With regard to the election this past Saturday, McKissick had opposition from two major candidates, Zoe Warren and Jeff Davis.

People asked Warren why he was running, and if that would cause a split from those opposing McKissick. The answer was “no”. It was assumed that Jeff Davis did not have support from those who did not like him, but would vote for Warren. The hope was to take enough votes from McKissick to garner a runoff between the two. Sadly, for those who believe that we the people are not being served by McKissick, that did not happen, and McKissick won.

However the real reason that happened was that Horry County was taken over by a group of McKissick supporters who illegally took over the HCGOP in October of last year. A group led by attorney Reese Boyd III, and others who call themselves the “Pirates”. In their case the name fits.

This is how it happened. In July of 2021, following the election of Roger Slagle to the chairmanship of the Horry County GOP (HCGOP), text messages show Boyd began a plot to take down Slagle along with others who were upset with the election. There is proof of this in text messages going back and forth between several of the Pirates. They were truly unscrupulous in their plans. In September 2022, under the leadership of Drew McKissick, several members of the America First movement, among them Roger Slagle, Tracy Diaz and other America First GOP Party members from other counties were condemned by the SCGOP Executive Committee.

The condemnation was in response to a legitimate motion made by Roger Slagle at the reconvened SCGOP Convention of July 30, 2022. The motion was a challenge of whether the call of said convention was executed properly. The motion was respectfully made to the Convention body and adhered to Parliamentary Rules. Tracy Diaz did not attend this convention, nor did she have any prior knowledge of this motion. In summary, these individuals were condemned by the SCGOP for participating in Party business and making a proper motion at a Convention.

At the September meeting of the HCGOP, Slagle and the entire board put in their resignations EFFECTIVE SEPTEMBER 30th, 2022. I highlight that because that is an important date. On September 26, 2022 we had a special meeting called by Roger Slagle, at which time he rescinded his resignation and that of two other board members. Diaz and the vice chair decided not to rescind.

This is extremely important to understand. According to the state bylaws this is acceptable if there had not been a vote to accept his resignation. It is acceptable by all the rules which govern these groups. However, Reese Boyd and Mike Connett and others began to disrupt the meeting to the point where nothing could be done, and the meeting adjourned without any resolution to the issue.

On October 11, 2022, Boyd and his Pirates called a meeting to elect a new chairman. Since Roger Slagle was still officially chairman based on all the rules, this was an illegal meeting which would have no meaning as to electing anyone. Regardless of the fact they held this meeting against all the rules and elected a new slate of officers without the required 2/3 quorum needed to vote on any business. There is a video that shows this. That did not matter, and they proceeded to take over the HCGOP without regard for any rules or proper certification.

It did not matter to them or to Drew McKissick who was more than happy to acknowledge them as official even if they were not. It was a coup de tat plain and simple. So why, one might ask, was this important to McKissick? Because he knew that the group under Slagle would not support his reelection to the state chair. He knew that if he took over Horry County with his lackeys they would give him the votes he needed to keep his power. He then recognized them as official, even though that was not legal. When the re-organization meetings were held the Pirate groups were given all the information needed to hold the meetings. Had Horry under Slagle been able to hold the county reorg McKissick would have lost in a huge way. He basically cheated his way back into power.

The sad part of this is McKissick wants power for himself and we the people be damned. His people control the precincts. The reality is this is bad for us all. I will not say there is corruption at the polls, but you can decide for yourselves why this power was so important. We the people will never have a chance to be heard as long as we have open primaries and the judges are appointed by the state. It is all controlled by the good ole boys in Columbia and Drew McKissick.
